Arnold Palmer wrote “[desire] promotes everything...Desire is probably the most major force in winning.” Byron Nelson once stated “my dream was to build a ranch and winning tournaments allowed me to do that, once I had it, I was all but done as a competitive player.”
These great champions and others possessed the undeniable quality of passion for winning. Zest, dreams, desire, will, and goals, symbolize the main ingredient required of being a champion. This notion of reaching for your dreams appears so simple, yet our dreams often succumb to other factors in our lives that restrict our potential. Herein lies the importance of merely having a goal and pursuing it. Thus, dreams are a requisite of playing great golf and only by knowing your dream will you be able to achieve great things.
Dreams are the intangible factor that keeps a golfer practicing on the range and dreams continue to motivate despite setbacks. Dreams can vary from playing on tour, to winning a club championship, or breaking 90, but nevertheless nothing can be achieved without them. Passion for the game translates into having a personal goal that drives one to accomplish more than mediocrity. This process is not an easy one and the better player you become the harder it is to remain committed to your goal. Ben Hogan also wrote “Don’t let anyone or anything come between you and your goal…You’ll find out just as I did how hard the last step is, but the rewards will more than offset the effort.”
Thus in the upcoming months, discover your dream for the game and develop a goal that will serve as a motivating factor. Lastly, in the words of the great coach Jim Valvano: don’t ever give up, never, ever give up.
